📊 WHAT THEY FOUND
Coffee fundamentally alters the gut microbiome and influences how we feel and think.
Main finding 1: Coffee changes specific gut bacteria. Coffee drinkers had higher amounts of certain bacteria (like Eggerthella and Firmicutes), while non-coffee drinkers had more of others (like Veillonella). This shift happened with both regular and decaf coffee, showing that the gut reacts to the coffee itself, not just the caffeine.
Main finding 2: Coffee affects your mood and behavior. At the start of the study, regular coffee drinkers had higher levels of impulsivity and emotional reactions compared to non-drinkers. However, when coffee drinkers quit for two weeks and then started drinking either regular or decaf again, they reported feeling less stressed, less impulsive, and less depressed.
Main finding 3: Coffee acts as an anti-inflammatory. Overall, coffee drinkers showed a healthier, lower baseline for inflammation in their blood compared to non-coffee drinkers. When coffee drinkers quit coffee for two weeks, their inflammation markers actually went up.
⚠️ LIMITATIONS
Findings are self-reported and may not be generalizable.
They did not physically measure how fast food moved through the digestive system. They used surveys. Since digestion speed directly affects gut bacteria, we cannot be completely sure how much of the bacteria changes were simply due to coffee making people use the bathroom faster.
The study was small and lacked diversity. They only looked at 62 people, and almost all of them were of the exact same race (Caucasian). Because our bodies all process foods a bit differently, these results might not apply to everyone, especially people of different ethnicities.
The non-coffee drinkers had to stop drinking all forms of caffeine (like tea) right before the study started. Some of the early differences between the two groups might have been slightly influenced by the non-coffee drinkers going through mild caffeine withdrawal.
